Daddario KS610-3/4M Kaplan Solo Bass

After more than 30 years of professional playing — and being a long‑time Pirastro user for solo tuning (Flexocor DeLuxe and Flat‑Chrome almost exclusively) — I finally decided to try the D’Addario KS610‑3M Kaplan Solo Bass set. The experience so far has been excellent, and I’m genuinely glad I took the step.

The A (1st) and E (2nd) strings are absolutely outstanding: extremely clear and brilliant, fast response, very comfortable under the fingers, smooth and buttery to the touch, perfect for fast passages and clean articulation. These two strings alone justify trying the set — they feel refined, modern and incredibly responsive.

Where things get more complicated is with the B (3rd) string. At least on my bass, it is too bright and lacks control. It speaks easily, yes, but the tone is somewhat wild and doesn’t blend with the elegance of the first two strings. The F# (4th) sits somewhere in between — not as uncontrolled as the 3rd, but still far from the balance and “perfection” of the A and E.

Of course, strings react differently on every instrument. I’ll give them time to settle and see if the brightness mellows. And later I’ll probably experiment with a mixed setup: Kaplan A and E, and Flat‑Chrome or DeLuxe for the B and F#. Sometimes the best results come from hybrid combinations.

What is clear is this: these are excellent, high‑quality strings, beautifully made and with a top‑tier feel.

Even if the full set isn’t the ideal match for my bass, the craftsmanship and performance are undeniable. For anyone curious about Kaplan Solo strings, they are absolutely worth trying — especially if you value clarity, speed and a modern, articulate response.
